Conceptual work: Fragile Wings

I studied Fine Art for about 7 years, with a degree in Fine Art Photography from the University of Wolverhampton. While I love a commercial shoot, often these briefs come to me already set, with a shotlist and styling we collaborate on. I love going back to my roots and delivering fine art, personal work.

In this piece, I wanted to do some work with some lovely moths as they are a subtle, but reoccurring symbol that comes up at different points in my life. My wonderful friend, studio owner and stylist friend Nisha Marie had some gorgeous taxidermy creatures she allowed me to borrow, and the concept began.

I really wanted to capture this concept with a male model, as a lot of my personal shoots are usually shot with women. I approached Chris, a Leeds-based model signed with Thembalethu Modelling Agency. Chris is also a good friend, and with his super cool look and interest in edgy fashion, I was delighted when he agreed to have some rather dead insects stuck to his face!

As a pair, we came up with our concept, Fragile Wings.

Through this visual story, “Fragile Wings” explores deeper into male strength, and emotional resilience.

This set encourages viewers to think more deeply about the hidden fragility that exists within masculinity.

Behind The Scenes

I’m by no means a hair or makeup artist, but I wanted this set to feel really raw. Chris allowed me to oil and style his hair and apply some eyeshadow and blush to compliment the moths. The bugs were very delicate, I stuck them on using some eyelash glue which was tacky to Chris’s skin before I applied them near his face to protect them. I added subtle gels for some of the images, and they gave a completley different look and feel to the rest which was interesting as a set. I am really happy with how they turned out, and already planning more personal shoots where I can explore my strange little concepts as a fine artist.
