Snowy Sunday - York Fashion Shoot

I’ve never actually done a fashion shoot in the snow! It’s hard when I work with models and you need to discuss outfits, makeup, locations and there’s usually travel involved. Every decent snow day in the past few years I’ve been busy or the snow melts before I get chance. However…When I opened my curtains this cold, January Sunday morning I knew my first model shoot of 2025 just had to be a snowy one!

I got straight on Instagram and posted a casting with a photo out of my window. I wasn’t expecting much of a response, most of my models are Yorkshire-based, but with trains cancelled and roads frozen over I knew it was going to be hard to find someone local. However my good friends over at Vauhaus sent me a message and my winter photography dreams came true!

I was so excited when I found out Jemima lived nearby in York City Centre. We quickly discussed wardrobe and vibe. With Jemima’s style and selection of stunning Disturbia dresses we decided on gothic fashion with lots of drama - perfect for a York shoot with the architecture, and a nice contrast to the snowy backdrop we had to work with.

After lots of scary sliding around on ice to get into town with my camera, we shot at the Merchant Adventurers' Hall and at York Minster. I was worried the snow was becoming quite mushy and not very aesthetic, so I really wanted so shoot up and show our stunning city, without shoppers or tourists in the background.

I packed lightly, just shooting with my 5D Mark IV, my 1.8 50mm with a UV filter to protect my equipment against the elements, and a reflector which ended up just holding our bags.
